Quick Video Tutorial to Make CARROT MUNCH
What you’ll need:
- Free CARROT MUNCH printed page & Carrot Practice Spots page (get this bundle when you’re signed-up to our Practice Pax Club newsletter). It will be in your inbox in minutes!
- Sign-up on https://practicepax.com
- 5” standard white styrofoam cup
- Pencil
- Glue, tape, scissors & utility knife
- White construction paper (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cut out the bunny pieces and carrot columns. For a stiffer bunny head, glue it to white construction paper before cutting it out (the back and carrots don’t need this).
2. Tape the bunny face towards the bottom of the cup, right above the thick rim. Tape the back of the bunny to the opposite side.
3. Use a sharpened pencil to twist and puncture the side of the cup as if it’s going directly through the belly of the bunny. Be sure it’s lined up with the height of the bunny’s mouth. Puncture a hole through the other side of the cup so the pencil is sticking out and is directly through the “middle” of the bunny.
4. Cut off the “tape here” on the carrot columns so they won’t be visible and tape the 3 carrot columns together. Be sure to completely tape over the front and back so it will roll up smoothly and won’t snag in the bunny’s mouth.
5. Tape the beginning of the carrot rows over the middle of the pencil inside the cup.
6. Use a utility knife to cut an opening along the light grey line by the bunny’s paws and across the bottom of the bunny’s mouth.
7. Twist the pencil sides to roll up the carrots and slide the end out of the bunny’s mouth. Gently pull all of the carrots out to start your practice!
How to Use Carrot Munch
Start with the row of carrots completely unrolled out of the bunny's mouth and extended on a table. By the end of the practice, the bunny will eat all of the carrots!
Practice Spots
With your child, fill out 4 (or more) spots they will need to practice. For example, if they play the piano, their first spot could be playing a C Major Scale slowly and cleanly (or maybe even just work on the top half of a scale). Tell your child that when they complete this spot, they will earn 3 carrots (or however many you decide). When the scale is done, your child will turn the pencil so their bunny can munch up 3 carrots.
Be sure to use this Carrot Munch activity in a positive way and never turn it into a punishment. As caregivers and teachers, we are trying to teach children to have positive associations with learning. Their practice should be any attempt at learning. When things get contentious, take a break, end the practice early, or have the child try it without you in the room.
Always end the practice positively and with praise. Your child should earn all of the carrots without tears.
Happy April practicing!
